It’s pizza at the touch of a button. That’s the idea behind this pizza vending machine that will hit the streets of Italy in the next few weeks. The ‘Let’s Pizza’ vending machine was designed alongside the University of Bologna and Anglo-Dutch group Unilever. Claudio Torghele is the developer. [Claudio Torghele, Pizza Machine Developer]: “It looks like a coffee-machine. The difference is that it produces pizza by means of a very simple procedure. The client can choose among four different types of pizza, he puts coins in the proper slots and the pizza is ready to eat in just two and a half minutes.” The machine uses infra-red rays and other technologies to make the dough, spread the tomato sauce and topping, and bake the pizza. The end result is ready in just under three minutes and costs five Euros, around six U.S. dollars. At this pizzeria in Naples, chefs prepare their infamous pizza recipe dating back to the 18th century. They’re unsure about the machine’s appeal. [Paolo Pagnani, Restaurant Owner]: “We should scrap this ‘pizza machine’ and replace it with the old jukebox that at last had some charm!” Their pizzas cost around 10 dollars and time is a vital ingredient, the dough must be left for 12 hours and the oven pre-heated to 300 degrees. [Marcello, Pizza Chef]: “Unfortunately, today people invent many things, but you can’t make any comparison, especially in terms of quality. The only benefit is the price.” The machine’s designers have high hopes for it, hoping to launch it across Europe and the United States.
